When the First Step Feels Too Big

The other day we came across a short video by Dr. Becky Kennedy, that shared a simple idea from her second-grade teacher.

She told her students:

“If something feels too hard to start, it just means the first step isn’t small enough.”

That line really stuck with us because it applies perfectly to fitness.

One of the biggest misconceptions people have about getting in shape is that the first step has to be a big one.

People think starting means overhauling their entire lifestyle overnight.

They picture waking up at 5:00am every day.

Meal prepping all their food.

Working out six days per week.

Cutting out everything they enjoy.

No wonder starting feels overwhelming.

But what if the reason it feels so hard isn’t because you lack motivation or discipline?

What if it’s simply because the first step you’re trying to take is too big?

At Park Fitness we see this all the time.

Someone hasn’t exercised in years and believes the only way it “counts” is if they dive in headfirst and go all-in immediately.

In reality, meaningful change rarely starts with a massive leap. It starts with something small enough that your brain says:

“Okay… I can do that.”

Maybe the first step is just scheduling two workouts this week.

Maybe it’s taking a 10-minute walk after dinner.

Maybe it’s adding a little more protein to breakfast.

Or maybe it’s simply showing up to your first session and learning a few movements.

Small steps don’t feel dramatic. They don’t look impressive on social media. But they are incredibly powerful because they build momentum.

And momentum is what actually creates long-term change.

Once you take that first small step, the second one becomes easier. Then the third. Then the fourth.

Before long, something that once felt impossible starts to feel normal.

Fitness should meet you where you are. Not always where you think you “should” be.

If starting feels overwhelming, it doesn’t mean you’re failing.

It just means the first step might not be small enough yet.

Shrink the step.

Take it.

And build from there.
